Garmin Approach S60 Premium GPS Golf Watch Review

Garmin Approach S60, Premium GPS Golf Watch

My buddy and I once bet $100 on a round of golf. It was close. I was trailing by 2 strokes and the pivotal moment came on the 6th hole. Both of our balls were on the middle of the fairway which left us both with a crucial club decision: which club to use based on the distance to the green?

My buddy ended up making the wrong choice and I made the wrong one. It costed me two more strokes and by the last hole I was out $100 and a lifetime of bragging rights. The defining factor of that round was not that my friend is the better golfer. It was that my friend had a golf watch and I didn’t.

He was able to measure the distance from the middle of the fairway to the hole and chose his club accordingly.

I am a pretty competitive guy so when I realized that I had lost a round of golf because I was inadequately equipped, I knew I had to do something about it.

That was what brought me to the Garmin Approach S60. It had the key feature that I was lacking that ultimately ended up costing me money and pride: the distance gage.

The Distance Gage

Garmin Approach S60 1

My experience with the distance gage on the Garmin Approach S60 has been extensive because I use it for almost all of my shots. It is extremely accurate down to the inch. It clearly displays exactly where I am on the course and the distance to the hole or any given point on the 1.2 inch anti-glare display.

For me this is the most helpful feature of the many loaded into this watch and not just for knowing which club would be best used. Before I play on a new course I use the distance gage to see the distance I will have to walk between each hole.

Course Mapping

There are 40,000 courses that are pre-mapped and programmed into the Garmin Approach S60 and you can map ones that aren’t pre-loaded too. This has been another helpful feature because I can quickly, frequently and conveniently read the course.

A lot of times I forget where traps and hazards are on a course and I don’t like fumbling around with maps.

That’s why the course mapping feature on this golf watch is so convenient. I keep it pulled up on the touchscreen display and I just have to turn my wrist to refresh my memory of where things are on the course.

Shot Tracking

This feature has been extremely helpful for analyzing and improving my game. You have to make sure you are wearing the watch on your lead wrist in order for this feature to work properly because if you don’t there will be some shots that don’t get recorded.

This feature keeps track of all your shots on a given round – how many you took, where they landed and the nature of your swings.

The AutoShot game tracker feature even helps you analyze your round based on your swings when compared to the specific course.

If you want to see how you performed on a specific hole the Garmin Connect feature separates your shots into individual holes which you can easy scroll through by tapping the scorecard.

Pros

  • The wristbands are easily replaceable and there are many options for material and color that fit this watch
  • The touchscreen display is full color and you can easily read it even if the sun is shining directly on it
  • You can sync the Garmin Approach S60 to your phone and get alerts for incoming calls or texts
  • The battery easily lasts for at least 2 full rounds of golf
  • Garmin Approach S60 is waterproof up to 50 meters
  • It can be used on any golf course you play on

Cons

  • There are some superfluous features like the step counter and the sports profiler that may not be useful to golfers
  • It is on the pricier side of golf watches
  • You have to download certain apps like Garmin Connect to use some of the tracking features
  • Scrolling on the 1.2 inch display can be tricky for golfers with big fingers

Rating my Experience

Garmin Approach S60 3

Overall I would say that the Garmin Approach S60 was a good purchase for me since I really enjoy the ability to track distances and how I performed on a given round.

The full color course maps allow me to avoid costly read mistakes and the distance gage has helped me make better club choices (and avoid losing bets).

It does have a lot of features that I don’t have any use for but that doesn’t detract from the other useful features that I enjoy. If you can take the rather steep price of the Garmin Approach S60 then I would definitely recommend it.

The Garmin Approach S60 helps me with my game and for me, that is the most important thing so it is worth the money in my book. If you want a watch that will actually be an aid on the links then you should check out the Garmin Approach S60.
